Okay. I admit it. This is no longer about BBQ. But I think it's fair to say it is about meat. Due to some overindulgences and car problems in key places, we were unable to get the amount of BBQ we were hoping for. But we haven't touched a fast food place the entire time and that's pretty good. John actually has a BBQ place planned for tomorrow on the way to Washington, D.C. So we're not out of the woods yet. Actually, right now, we are very much in the woods. We're staying at a place right outside of Charleston called Yeaman's Hall. It is a small New England community smack dab in the middle of the South. Currently we're the only ones here. It's a 30 home community on many (not sure how many, but a whole lot) acres. There are also a bunch of guest cottages and a guest house with a bunch of rooms and suites. So it's kinda weird. Just us. It's like the shining only really warm out. I think I saw Scatman Cruthers in the bar. And Shelly Duvall was hanging out in the hall. But that might've just been a local gal hangin' out. Not sure. We spent the day in Savannah walking around and checking stuff out. Those of you who have read previous dispatches know i've been here before. I'm a big fan. Love it. Can't get enough of it. Lindsay lives in a cool place. We had lunch at the City Market. An old place in the historical part of Savy, as the locals like to call it. Actually they don't like to call it that. I've never heard it called that in my life. Hey, maybe it'll stick. Say it with me: "Savy." Hmmm. Maybe not. Burger for me. Ham sandwich for John. Roast Beef for Lindsay. All were pleased. Lindsay agreed with me that an ice cream was in order. We felt that it had to be earned, though. So we walked for a bit first. I think all would agree with me that it was hot. About 100, but really humid. 110 in Blythe ain't got nuthin' on 100 in Savy (no?). After enough walking we had an ice cream (note: I weighed in today at 189. But in my defense i was dressed and had my really big and heavy phone in my pocket. And it was after all that eating). We then continued on to some town squares. There are more town squares in Savannah (better?) than any other city in America. They also have the second largest St. Patrick's day festivities in the country. Boston? Are we falling behind? They couldn't beat you in the Civil War. How can you let them beat you at this? After a little more looking around, we headed back to Lindsay's to get ready to leave. For a change, we had a short drive ahead of us. Only about 150 miles. Cake walk. We could do it in our sleep. Come to think of it, I don't really remember the drive. Oh, my. What have we done? Oh, wait a minute. I remember. It rained. First rain we've seen. Lightning. Thunder. The whole show. It brought the temperature down about 15 degrees. Quite lovely. Upon our arrival at Yeaman's Hall, we checked in with Scatman, then went for a run. First one for me since The Arizona High Country. Maybe the last, too. Unless I get up super early tomorrow. Yeah, I think I'm done with the runs for now. Maybe in NYC. Or even Lewistown. Dinner was had at a cool litle restaurant called Hominy. Pork Chops for me. Meatloaf for John. Hush Puppies and Fried Green Tomatoes were also in the mix. Oh, yeah, and a Pecan pie. But that's it. Really. Save for a couple beers. After dinner, we walked around a bit. Charleston is really cool, too. A lot of preppy types. But we found a cool dive bar called Big John's Tavern. Good livin'. Pints of Bud Light. We got home early 'cause we have a drive ahead of us tomorrow. And John wants to get up really early and play golf. But that's fine with me. We each have our own suites tonight. There's no waking me up. |
